Education: a fundamental factor for the peace and happiness of the human being
“A quality, integral and comprehensive education: a right for the peace and happiness of the human being,” was the central topic of the lecture given by William Soto Santiago, executive president of the GEAP and CUMIPAZ, who spoke on the importance of education as a transforming axis in societies.
This lecture was given during the Educational Session ALIUP, of the Peace Integration Summit (CUMIPAZ).
“Education is a fundamental factor to effectively fight against poverty, inequality and counteract other problems that are being provoked by, for example, the increasing amount of terrorist attacks around the world,” he stated.
Also, he said that these extreme groups are destabilizing world peace by providing and education for war, capturing children and youths, forming them with the promise of an education based on discipline, belonging, with a goal and sense of work, when in reality they are educated on a culture of violence.
“The only way to counteract this global issue is, foremost, with a serious and dedicated commitment from authorities in establishing mechanisms so that every citizen of the world can enjoy their right to education; but not any type of education: an education based on human rights, which allows the individual to make to correct decisions that will positively impact their environment,” he said.
Modification of the educational culture for peace
Soto mentioned in his lecture that disciplines have become independent of ethics, principles and values; and that new paradigms for an education of peace should be established, parting from the integral formation of the human being in their heart, spirit and body.
“Many educational models are focused on regulating the educational process, they define the content to impart, the procedures, but they do not touch the very essence of teaching. A good educational model must, firstly, recognize how the individual is integrally formed,” he stated.
The Educational Session of CUMIPAZ 2016 was established with the purpose of urging academic authorities to establish a culture of peace by implementing an integral and comprehensive educational model that recognizes the essence of people as the basis for achieving the inalienable rights to peace and happiness of the human being and Mother Earth.
