MAURICIO MÉNDEZ, is Mayor of San Pedro La Laguna, Sololá, for the period 2016-2020. Méndez has a degree in Architecture, number 1,361, graduated with honors for having presented the first thesis, on a national level, in his native language, the tzutujil translated into Spanish.
Speaker of three languages, tzutujil, Spanish and English. He has had experience since 2001 working on the planning, supervision and execution of works in more than 12 municipalities nationwide.
He is currently the president of the La Laguna Mancomunidad, made up of the municipalities of San Pedro La Laguna, San Juan La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna and San Marcos La Laguna. In addition, he is vice president of the Association of Mayors of Sololá, representative of the National Association of Municipalities, ANAM, before the Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Lake Atitlán Basin and its Surroundings, AMSCLAE.
Among his achievements, the creation of the municipal agreement 111-2016 stands out, where it eradicates the use of plastic bags, duroport and straws, product of the analysis of statistical data where it was found that the treatment plant was filling with plastic. San Pedro La Laguna, has been the only municipality that has generated this type of agreements in the entire Lake Atitlán basin.
