The Chair for Peace, from CUMIPAZ to the world

As a result of the work of the Peace Integration Summit - CUMIPAZ, the Chair for Peace was presented during the Education Session of this 3rd edition of the Summit, Panama 2017.
The Chair is an international program, the product of the work of more than 300 universities, coordinated by the International Alliance of Universities for Peace (ALIUP), which is promoted by the Global Embassy of Activists for Peace (GEAP) and made up of 190 institutions of higher education in different countries.
In order to promote a comprehensive education for the peace and happiness of the human being, the Chair was presented to ministers, vice ministers, and secretaries of education, rectors, professors and professors of universities in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, at the headquarters of the Latin American Parliament.
The presentation was given by the general director of the GEAP, Gabriela Lara, and the pro tempore secretary of the ALIUP, Hermelinda Alvarenga. This educational project was part of the work commitments acquired at CUMIPAZ 2016-Paraguay.
A new century, a new educational model
Lara indicated that current educational trends are based on a model from the previous century centered on knowledge and skills, a neutral education that only works on the intellect part; said that it is not a negative criticism of education, given that this model has contributed to social and economic development.
"The greatest efforts have been made in educating physical aspects with respect to the body and the learning of cognitive abilities, neglecting to educate the heart with values and principles that lead the human being to make decisions that produce positive actions and consequently an effective transformation", she said.
She emphasized that it is important to consolidate an education that forms balanced integral leaders who have knowledge and skills, but who also respect the dignity and differences of their neighbors; people that become transformational leaders who positively impact their environment.
The Chair for Peace contemplates current themes that will be developed in participatory spaces to encourage the reflection of university students about their role in society as a promoter of peace.
Multipliers of education in values
"We are a consequence of an education in values, that's why we are here, but we want to multiply that," said Hermelinda Alvarenga, ALIUP's pro tempore secretary, also vice rector of Paraguay's Nihon Gakko University.
She explained that the recipients of the Chair for Peace are university students from any area and that the duration can be semiannual, quarterly or modular according to the modality.
She also indicated that students must be regularly enrolled in any period and that the proposed workload is forty-eight (48) academic hours.
Themes and application
Subjects included in the Chair:
- Building a Culture of Peace.
- The Integral Development of the Human Being.
- The Preservation of the Life of Mother Earth.
- Sustainable development
- Music for Peace.
- Justice.
Also included in the themes are the good use of communication technologies for the benefit of individuals and societies.
The Chair for Peace will initially be applied to universities in Latin America; among the countries that will soon start implementing is Paraguay. Subsequently, it will be presented in the United States and some European countries such as Spain.
