14,000 Mexicans participate in international celebration
World Blood Donor Day
On June 14, the Global Embassy of Activists for Peace (GEAP) celebrated World Blood Donor Day in 18 states of Mexico, as part of the Integral Program: Life is in the Blood.
With the aim of contributing to the formation of a culture of voluntary, altruistic and regular donation of safe blood, to increase the active and effective participation of the citizens, different activities were carried out.
The activity counted with the participation of more than 14,000 people from different universities, companies and health centers of the nation.
The volunteers of the GEAP organized awareness and blood donation drives. In addition, tributes to regular donors. During the celebration there were 93 days where 13,567 people were sensitized, and a result of 876 effective units of safe blood.
More Mexicans join
In the main square of the Municipal Presidency of Coahuila, 150 people attended the blood drive, where a total of 35 effective units were achieved. The activity was attended by Jorge Morán and Manuel Velazco, representatives of Municipal Health, and Héctor López, delegate of the Mexican Red Cross.
Active participation
In the state of Chihuahua, the blood drive, which reached a total of 162 blood units, had the participation of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICB), the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) and the International Federation of Medical Students Associates (IFMSA).
In Tamaulipas, 180 cadets from the 77th Battalion of the Mexican Army attended as volunteer donors. The blood drive had the collaboration of the Children's Hospital and General Norberto Treviño. This campaign resulted in a total of 36 effective donations.
With the participation of blood banks, hospitals, public and private entities of Tabasco, Veracruz and Chiapas, World Blood Donor Day was celebrated, with solidarity blood drives where citizens donated the life sap.
In Tabasco, 48 units were accepted; a total of 42 voluntary donors were accepted in Veracruz; while in Chiapas 37 were positive.
Health centers support solidarity work
In the General Hospital of Teziutlán de Puebla, 9 voluntary donors received recognition for the altruistic work, and in the blood drive accomplished, 4 effective units of safe blood were obtained.
In Campeche, Virginia Peña, director of the State Blood Transfusion Center (CETS), supported the day that contributed 15 effective units to this health institution.
In Monterrey, Nuevo León, the GEAP together with the Ministry of Health recognized the work of the altruistic and regular donors with a gift and delivery of acknowledgments. Finally, a blood drive was made that resulted in 123 safe units.
Awareness talks
The activists of the GEAP of San Luis Potosí, Tlaxcala and Durango carried out awareness activities and donation days in hospitals and educational centers, obtaining a total of 32 positive units.
Contribution to society
Likewise, in Michoacán 32 effective units were obtained. The blood drive counted with the collaboration of the State Center of Blood Transfusion (CETS) and the Faculty of Medicine of the Michoacán University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH).
In the State of Yucatan, 58 units were accepted. The campaign was supported by the Blood Bank of the UMAE of Mérida and the Hospital San Carlos of the municipality of Tizimín.
Walk for life
Simultaneously, the GEAP carried out an awareness walk in Puebla, Chiapas and Oaxaca to promote the culture of voluntary, altruistic and regular donation of safe blood. This activity gathered around 600 people.
The closure was made in the city of Puebla, where the deputy participated federal, Genoveva Huerta and the local public health officer of FIAEM, Mario Meza.
