Uruguay celebrated the will and altruism of blood donors
Citizens showed their solidarity during World Blood Donor Day
To celebrate the World Blood Donor Day (June 14), which aims to thank voluntary donors for their solidarity, the Global Embassy of Activists for Peace (GEAP) in Uruguay, held a blood drive.
The Activists for Peace promoted the need to share life by donating blood at the blood bank of the Medical Union of Artigas (Gremeda) and the Luis Eduardo Juan Departmental Hospital.
The event, which took place within the framework of the 7th International Marathon "Life is in the Blood" held by the GEAP for the collection of this vital liquid, was supported by the technical director of Hemoterapia Artigas Department, Dr. Venancio Riani, and representatives of the Rotary Sembrador organization, Cristina Ferrari Cocaro and Miguel Vargas.
To raise awareness on the need to donate blood regularly and selflessly is among the objectives established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Therefore, the GEAP, through the International Program "Life is in the Blood ", holds events to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products (See: International Program on Life is in the Blood).
Dr. William Soto, Global Ambassador, as a pioneer and visionary of this initiative, states:
"The goal of this donation campaign is to raise awareness in society about the need for a change in the system of blood donation, to promote voluntary, altruistic and habitual donation". (Soto, 2013)
Local media such as canal 3 TV Artigas and canal 4 Ideas del Norte, and the program “Digan lo que digan”, broadcasted by Radio Cuareim, directed by journalist Monty Suarez contributed to spreading this noble cause.
WHO established the theme of the campaign for this 2016: "Blood connects us all," and adopted the motto: "Share Life - Give blood" in order to draw the attention of people on the importance of voluntary donation systems.
The GEAP joined this call and recognized the selfless work of thousands of volunteers from Latin America, Europe and the United States who have joined this humanitarian work for the life and welfare of the human family.
