Panamanians join the 6th International Marathon “Life is in the Blood”
More than 450 people gave their contribution of life and became voluntary blood donors
Under the Integral Program “Life is in the Blood”, the Global Embassy of Activists for Peace (GEAP) in Panama, held during the month of November, the 6th International Blood Donation Marathon in coordination with the National Program of Blood of the Ministry of Health.
8 universities, 2 companies and 6 provinces participated in the workshops held in different parts of the country, where more than 450 people expressed the desire to be voluntary blood donors as a gesture of solidarity for their peers.
A total of 255 effective units was the result of the campaigns, figure that managed to give a significant contribution to blood banks. It should be noted that to supply blood banks it is necessary that between 3% and 5% of the population of a country are blood donors every year.
In Panama, less than 1% donates annually. According to statistics, in 2014, about 56,000 people took this important step. For this reason, the GEAP through the Integral Program “Life is in the Blood” seeks to create awareness in society about the need for a change in the blood donation system.
The GEAP in Panama, for the 7th Marathon will continue to carry out blood drives throughout the country, in order to promote a culture of voluntary, altruistic and regular donation of safe blood, and increase the number of voluntary donors in the nation.
